Quenching the Thirst of the Fauna

It was easy to see tigers in their natural habitat a century back. However, a drastic decline can be noticed in their population in the last few years. Today, the number of tigers in the wild is estimated to be around 3,900 and if this trend continues, tigers may cease to exist. Henceforth, measures should be taken to conserve tigers and take care of their well-being.

H. Auden – a renowned poet, has rightly quoted, “Thousands have lived without love, not one without water.” Today, water issues are genuine, with few sustainable options being developed. Unfortunately, wild animals do not get access to a sufficient amount of potable water. Every summer records a high number of animal deaths as there is a considerable decrease in the groundwater level. Therefore, Key Management Group Inc. devises strategies to maintain the welfare of the tigers and furnish them with a sufficient supply of water.

KMG, as a part of its CSR initiative, has collaborated with Save-the-Tiger project – a social media group working towards the well-being of the tigers. Tiger Water Life (TWL) program endeavors to install bores and solar pumps in the Central Parts of India to ensure constant and sufficient water supply to tigers and other wild animals even in the summer months.

TWL has already installed 26 solar pumps in the Tiger Reserves in Nagzira, Tipeshwar, Tadoba, Brahmapuri, and two Adivasi villages of Topi Tola and Nachantola in MP. Under this initiative, a Forest Regeneration Program has also been started, which involves planting trees downstream of the water bodies filled in by the solar pumps. Through this project, KMG has willingly contributed to install four solar water pumps. The recent ones have been installed in Tipeshwar and North Brahampuri.

TWL program has brought wonderful success stories as results were almost immediately noticeable. With the installation of solar pumps, the tigers no longer have to bear the brunt of water scarcity in the summer months. Moreover, the last two pumps installed have brought water to the villagers besides benefitting the Tigers in that area. The Indian Forest Service officers have appreciated our efforts. Apart from installing solar water pumps, TWL’s long-term goals include methane gas harvesting from domestic cows and buffaloes for cooking. Funding the education of all children in the village of Topi Tola is another objective that we will be focusing on.
